Home Articles Album Reviews High Voltage Maynard Ferguson Album Reviews - High Voltage From Downbeat; January 1988. There's more than a touch of Armstrong audible in Maynard Ferguson's straight forward rendition of Stardust and that tension (MF's swing phrasing over a variety of contemporary grooves) infects most of High Voltage. Maynard's reduced seven-piece electric combo has become increasingly MORish though their energetic offerings are light years ahead of similar settings for Herb Alpert or Chuck Mangione. The band lays down a variety of substantial grooves from calypso to funk which benefit greatly from the exceptional sound quality. A solid choice for fusion fans, others should tread more cautiously. |
